Project Overview:

The Coney Island Water Pollution Plant is equipped with two outfalls that discharge effluent to Rockaway Inlet at Jamaica Bay. A portion of the older 72-inch outfall pipe failed adjacent to its outfall chamber. The diffuser system did not function properly either. Hydraulic modeling of the existing diffuser system indicated that a new diffuser system was required. The project involved the demolition and removal of a portion of the 72-inch diameter outfall pipe, demolition and removal of the associated outfall chamber and diffuser system, and the replacement with a new diffuser system. Work also included the clean out of the last diffuser, No. 13 on the existing 90-inch pipe outfall.
